Jo-Ann Sanborn has joyfully painted the threatened Everglades landscape since falling in love at first sight in the mid 1990’s.  The focus of her work is to bring attention to the fragile threatened landscape with strong,  expressionistic paintings rich with uncommon color.  She invites to the viewer to take a breath and become engaged in the natural world and hopes that enjoyment of her work will encourage attention to Everglade’s preservation and protection.

Her work is enjoyed by international collectors across the United States, Canada, several Europe countries, Scandinavia, and Africa.  She has been honored with solo shows and numerous awards and is a member of several professional organizations including the National Association of Women Artists.  Sanborn loves travel, teaching and holds plein aire workshops in the Everglades.  She lives and works on Marco Island, FL where she maintains her studio.

Statement

In the Everglades the bold forms of the flora in the sun and the deep, mysterious shadows in shade invite artistic exploration.  As soon as I master the nuances of one view, the majesty of a cypress grove, a wind-riffled meadow in warm sunshine, or swirling clouds in a multitude of blues provide a new source of inspiration and challenge. Using established art principles to begin and my intuition as the work progresses,  I paint the landscapes of Florida moving from abstraction to realism.  My images are ancient and familiar, palms, prairie, water and clouds. Through them, it is my fondest dream that one of my paintings will bring beauty and joy to your home, and that you will hear the voice of the Everglades through my work.
