For more than a century, Americans young and old have been fascinated
Event Details
For more than a century, Americans young and old have been fascinated by the excitement and glamor that are part of the railroad tradition–the power of locomotives, the pleasant thrill and sense of adventure inspired by the sound of a train whistle in the distance, the sight of endless rails stretching in the horizon, the mystery of far-off places.
This romance of railroading and, in late years, an increased awareness of the essential nature of railroads, have stimulated a tremendous interest in railroad history, equipment, organization, services, operations, and so on.
This exhibit is adapted from a booklet for teachers published by the Association of American Railroads throughout the 1950s, that includes photographs and descriptions designed to engage students in the study of railroading.
Enjoy this journey back in time!

THE STORY: 1939 Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, Gone with the Wind, a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel. The screenplay, you see, just doesn’t work. So what’s an all-powerful movie mogul to do? While fending off the film’s stars, gossip columnists and his own father-in-law, Selznick sends a car for famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and pulls formidable director Victor Fleming from the set of The Wizard of Oz. Summoning both to his office, he locks the doors, closes the shades, and on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men labor over five days to fashion a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all time.

As wildfires rage across national forests turned to tinderboxes
Event Details
As wildfires rage across national forests turned to tinderboxes — their historic stewards driven from the land or forbidden to tend it — while our waterways waver between historic droughts and catastrophic floods, it just may be time to stop fighting to control the earth and work to heal it. It stands to reason that if we wish to understand what the world we live in is telling us, we should seek the counsel of those who already speak its language.
This new exhibit, created in part through a collaborative effort with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, seeks to re-enforce the relevance and underscore the importance of recent initiatives by organizations, institutions, and even governments — from the Federal level on down — to integrate the knowledge and experience of indigenous cultures into policies and decision-making.
When pioneer settlers began to colonize South Florida in the late 1800s, the most successful of their lot were those who not only befriended but also listened to and learned from the people who had called the Everglades their home for centuries.
Sharing the Path explores both the past influence and the future possibilities of implementing traditional indigenous knowledge in everything from land management to decision-making. The exhibit uses the words and voices of indigenous people from South Florida and beyond to communicate the shared belief that all living things are connected and how that understanding can aid us in navigating challenges in everything from global diplomacy to our most personal relationships: with each other, ourselves, and the earth itself.

Our current temporary exhibit, Sharing the Path, explores the continuing stewardship of the biologically diverse and environmentally sensitive region known as the Everglades by our region’s indigenous residents. In this talk given by renowned environmental educator and member of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, Betty Osceola, guests will learn firsthand about the indigenous population’s spiritual connection to the land—the home of their ancestors—and their determination to honor, protect, and defend it as sacred ground. Betty Osceola was the recipient of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Defender of the Everglades award in 2024. She is also a tribal judge, has appeared in numerous documentary films and television shows (including the Disney feature “Path of the Panther” and Jeff Corwin’s “Wildlife Nation”) and continues to work tirelessly to advocate for the Everglades.

Event Details
Event Details

In recent years we have commemorated the birthday of county founder Barron Gift Collier and his earliest investment in the Everglades area with the “Grapefruit Gala.” Collier’s 1921 purchase of a grapefruit grove at Deep Lake ultimately shifted the local economy toward tourism and led to the creation of our county in 1923. That’s why we say, “It all started with grapefruit.”
This year we decided to plant new seeds by celebrating Mr. Collier’s accomplishments and the community’s agricultural roots with an invitational art fair and fruit tree sale. Don’t worry, we’ll still have live music and fresh Florida citrus, too! Join us for food, fun, art and music!
Artists interested in participating in this inaugural event should contact the Museum Manager at 239-252-5027.

Event Details
Event Details

In 1926, Everglades (later known as Everglades City) was in its heyday. Barron Collier, the visionary millionaire entrepreneur who founded the modern version of the town, was just hitting his stride. The Tamiami Trail, a highway across the Everglades connecting Florida’s coasts and financed by Collier was nearing completion. Meanwhile, the coastal community opened its first high school, the Everglades Inn hotel was expanding, and both an iconic county courthouse and a third, much grander, home for Mr. Collier’s Bank of Everglades were under construction.
Join us as Museum Manager Thomas Lockyear turns the calendar back a full century to explore the once booming town that Collier built and how its present-day incarnation—smaller, quieter, and only occasionally bustling—still reflects those intrinsically American values that form the fabric of our nation.
This talk will lay the groundwork for our next temporary exhibit, which will celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary and open on the 4th of July.
