Lecture Critic’s Choice Tom Lake Artis—Naples Lifelong Learning Elaine Newton, Professor Emeritus of Humanities at York University, Toronto The book to be discussed is Tom Lake by Ann Patchett Beloved literary fiction author Ann Patchett returns with Tom Lake, a book that has already been picked as part of Reese Witherspoon’s book club list. The novel artfully floats between a family orchard in Northern Michigan during the spring of 2020, where Lara’s three adult daughters are visiting, and Lara’s own recollections of her romantic years participating in a theater company called Tom Lake. As her daughters inquire about the past and tease out old memories, the women are able to examine the lives they’ve lived — both alone and together as a family. With Patchett’s expert authorship, this compelling narrative explores the nuances of family dynamics and meditates on all forms of love: young, married and familial.
