Artist Statement

I grew up in Michigan, in a large, boisterous family, where “quiet time” was found by creating.  A self-taught artist, my love of drawing was enhanced by the change of seasons - the changes in the atmosphere - and all of the brilliant flowers and colors that arrived with each season.

Growing up in the 50's was truly a magical time - catching fireflies in a jar, hopscotch, and jump rope; playing with paper dolls, whose wardrobes were designed and colored by my older sister; television was new - it was the era of The Wonderful World of Disney; The Mickey Mouse Club, and lunch with Soupy Sales.  All of this was magic to me and filled me with a love for the beauty of our world and with a need to create.

Art allows me to visually express my love of life and the natural beauty all around.  Through use of vivid color and detail,  I've become known for my detailed paintings of figures and tropical birds, as well as my versatility of subject matter. Greatly influenced by the art of Norman Rockwell, my paintings will tell you a story or simply engage you with the attention to detail.

The Marco Island Center for the Arts, where I served two consecutive terms on the Board of Directors,  Chaired  the Gallery Committee, and teach oil painting, has been my home away from home.   I was a founding member of the Artist Colony at the Esplanade on Marco Island, where I shared Portside Studio, a working studio/gallery, with two artists for 3 yrs.  I also belong to The Naples Art Association, Bonita Springs Center for the Arts, am a juried member of American Women Artists, and Oil Painters of America

My art has taken me down many paths:   finalist for the former N Magazine’s “Enny Award;”  Poster artist for the 2009 Naples National Art Festival; past exhibitor in the NAA’s Founders’ Shows; a participant in the Naples Designers Show House; creator of two “gators” for the von Liebig’s Gators Galore event; creator of a dolphin for Dolphin Debut on Marco Island; created two Cartoon Maps of Marco Island for the Marco Island Sun Times; participated in three Third on Canvas wet paint events in Naples and all of the Wet Paint Live events on Marco Island (my piece set an auction record in 2016!); participated in two Ft. Myers Beach "Paint the Beach" wet paint events, where my piece won People's Choice Award in 2015; painted 2 turtles for "Turtles on the Town" in Collier County, FL., one of which was purchased for permanent display at the YMCA in Naples before the auction! I've taught a painting workshop in the south of France and have won various awards.  My work is in private collections throughout the U.S. and abroad.  Painting live, whether at events (weddings & other events) or simply outdoors, is a great joy for me.  The activity around me, the light, sounds, and scents all have an effect on the final piece created.  I never know where my brush will take me and that's part of the charm of painting .
